Self Defense Classes:
SETpoint offers Empowerment-Based Self Defense coaching that combines the physical resistance skills of traditional self-defense with confidence-building empowerment training. This training is trauma-informed and taught BY women FOR women. A PAAR Counselor will be present at all times.
Level 1 is a discussion-group style session in which SETpoint coaches will explain and demonstrate core principles around Situational Awareness as a tool to maximize our reaction time; Boundary Setting and De-Escalation with focus on body position, voice and eye contact; Physical Self Defense choices and tools that maximize our body's own strength; and common items that can be used as a self defense tool. Participants will receive a summary sheet of all topics discussed as well as information on advocacy and support services. Participants will have an opportunity to practice these skills in a follow up Level 2 session the following week (see description below).
Level 2 focuses on personal practice in Situational Awareness, Boundary Setting and De-Escalation, and Physical Self-Defense choices and skills. The Level 2 workshop is a combination of discussion, simulation and hands-on application. Attendees can join in the hands-on activities to the level comfortable. A Munio key ring self-defense tool will be provided for all participants as well as a summary sheet of topics discussed. As one participant said following a session at PAAR, "I've taken these types of courses before, but they were taught by men and there were other men in the room. I never believed I could do this ... It was good to have just women in here".
